#72 5 Strategies to Manage Work Related Stress and Anxiety

The 360 Leadhership Podcast, Episode 72, 10 May 2023 by Lucy Gernon

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the constant pressure and challenging personalities at work?

Trust me, I get it. I’ve worked with hundreds of women in leadership positions who have experienced this firsthand. They often get stuck in their own heads, second-guessing themselves and worrying about how to handle certain individuals. Some even experience physical symptoms like headaches, butterflies, and chest tightness.

If this sounds like you, know that you are not alone, my friend.

The fast-paced work environment can definitely take a toll on your mental and physical health, especially if you’re in a senior leadership position with its own unique challenges and responsibilities. In fact, a recent study by the American Institute of Stress identified work-related stress as the leading cause of stress in the US, with 80% of workers experiencing stress on the job.

But here’s the good news: I’m about to share some practical strategies you can use to manage stress and anxiety associated with work! And it starts with my favourite topic – setting boundaries. Communicate your limits to your colleagues and boss, say no to tasks outside your remit, and set realistic expectations.

It may require a mindset shift, but trust me, it’s worth it. Setting boundaries can increase your confidence, respect, and free time. I recorded a full podcast episode on this where I walk you through my 3 step DAD method to set and assert your boundaries. Click here to listen now.

My next strategy is practicing self-care. Nourishing your mind and body is crucial for reducing work-related stress and anxiety. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and practice relaxation techniques like breath work, mindfulness, and meditation. Regular exercise is also an excellent way to reduce stress.

It’s time to prioritise yourself, and if you need some accountability and support, feel free to DM me the word CALM on Instagram or LinkedIn. Or, for even more guidance on this, listen to episode 32. This episode will show you the tools so you can worry less and feel more calm.

If you’re finding it challenging to manage stress and anxiety, seeking support from a coach, friend, or family member can help. As an executive coach, I have supported hundreds of women in leadership positions to stress less and achieve more through one-to-one coaching and group mastermind programs.

And if you’re not sure if you need a career coach, a life coach, an executive coach, a mentor, or a therapist, don’t worry! I recorded an episode that breaks each of these down for you to support you in finding the right solution.

Poor time management can lead to increased stress and anxiety levels, it’s so important to prioritise tasks, create a schedule, and delegate when necessary. And don’t forget to take short breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries and reduce stress levels. Even the top CEOs in the world take breaks every 36 minutes!

Try to at least take 5 mins every hour and for God sake, allow yourself to take a lunch break woman! You deserve to eat and recharge.
