Don’t get me wrong, International Women’s Day is a fantastic initiative and I am a big advocate for it. It’s essential to celebrate women and raise awareness about gender equality, and equity. 

But here’s the truth – Supporting female talent shouldn’t be limited to just one day. That’s not enough to create lasting change.

After talking to numerous women leaders on the topic, something really stood out. People often see these events as one day, PR stunts that are quickly forgotten about.

As a keynote speaker at multiple International Women’s Day events each year, I’ve immersed myself in organisational cultures and witnessed the gaps in nurturing and empowering  female talent first hand. The gender pay gap is still there, and not all women receive the support they need to advance their careers.

And guess what? Even after these events, women approach me privately seeking coaching and mentorship services yet still can’t manage to secure the necessary funding to invest in their own development. It frustrates me to see organisations make their female talent jump through hoops for minimal investment, while they themselves generate billions.

  • Studies reveal that 75% of women experience imposter syndrome during their careers, compared to 62% of men. This confidence gap can lead women to doubt their capabilities, overwork, and neglect work-life balance.

  • Shockingly, only 25% of women negotiate their salaries, compared to 46% of men. This disparity contributes to the persistent gender pay gap. Organisations need to empower women to advocate for themselves by offering negotiation training and cultivating an environment where salary discussions are encouraged.

  • Research shows that women often apply for jobs only if they meet 100% of the listed qualifications, while men apply with just 60% alignment. This mindset gap restricts women from taking risks and putting themselves forward for opportunities.
