#68 How to let Go of Childhood Sh!t That is Holding You Back

The 360 Leadhership Podcast, Episode 68, 12 April 2023 by Lucy Gernon

Are childhood events holding you back from being the best version of yourself?

As a woman in a leadership position, you may have important goals such as achieving work-life balance and overall happiness. But believe it or not, in order to achieve these goals, it is crucial to understand that your childhood experiences and beliefs have played a significant role in shaping who you are today.

In fact, childhood experiences and beliefs can have a profound impact on how you perceive yourself, especially before the age of seven when your core beliefs are formed.

The beliefs you hold about yourself may not reflect reality, yet they are so deeply ingrained in your identity that you may not even realise this. As a high achieving  woman in leadership, you may be familiar with common beliefs like “You’re not good enough” or “You don’t deserve to be paid more .” While these beliefs may drive you to achieve more, they can also hinder your personal growth and prevent you from realising your full potential.

It’s crucial to understand that others’ behaviours can also be influenced by their childhood experiences. For instance, if a colleague is a perfectionist, it may be because they grew up in a chaotic environment and needed to have control to feel safe. Similarly, if you’re a people pleaser, it could be a survival mechanism from childhood.

Recognising the impact of childhood experiences is an essential step towards letting go of limiting beliefs and behaviours.

Prioritise the inner work of understanding your childhood experiences and beliefs. By taking this step, you can let go of limiting beliefs that may be holding you back, and take strides towards becoming the best version of yourself.

Always remember, you are already good enough, and your childhood experiences do not have to define your present or future.

You hold all the power to make positive changes with the right strategy, tools and support.
