#89 7 Things I’d Stop Doing Immediately If I Worked In Corporate Leadership Again

The 360 Leadhership Podcast, Episode 89, 06 September 2023 by Lucy Gernon

Curious about the key practices successful leaders avoid in corporate roles?

You’ve probably heard tons of tips on what leaders should do to succeed at work. But have you ever considered what they stay away from?

When you’re immersed in a multinational corporation, it’s easy to lose sight of your actual self within the company’s ideals and mission.

But successful leaders take a different path. They learn and grow, always working on getting better at what they do.

I’ve invested considerable time and effort in breaking free from old mindsets, embracing continuous growth, and investing in my professional development.

So for this week’s episode, I share the seven essential things I would stop doing in the corporate world if I were to go back, uncovering secrets that can lead you to a life of success, balance, and happiness.

By recognising the value of investing in yourself, you’re already ahead of the game!

1. Stop Waiting For Your Boss to Promote You

Many women find themselves stuck at certain levels, waiting for promotions or opportunities. It’s time to break free from this waiting game and embrace our own power and worth to achieve personal and professional transformation.

2. Stop Being Afraid of Dominant Men.

In the fast-paced and demanding pharmaceutical industry, I used to feel intimidated by dominant masculine energy, hindering my ability to speak up and recognize my own worth. Looking back, I wish I could tell my younger self that I had valuable contributions to offer and that it wasn’t a man’s world. It’s time to break free from self-doubt and realise that you belong in the room and have the power to make your own decisions.

3. Stop Pleasing People

For a long time, I struggled to take emotion out of my decision making. Being a people-pleaser and not fully recognizing my own worth, I often sacrificed time with my family and attended meetings or completed work tasks that didn’t add value. I allowed my emotions to guide my choices, making managing team dynamics draining and challenging.

But now, I’ve come to understand the power within me, learning to put my business hat on and make decisions confidently without being emotionally drained.

4. Stop Feeling and Thinking Like You Weren’t Doing Enough

If you’re stuck in that loop of working all the time and still feeling like you’re not getting anywhere, I totally get it. As a driven leader with big dreams, it’s super easy to be your harshest critic. But here’s the truth: you are doing enough. It’s time to shift your mindset and recognise your worth and impact, freeing yourself from the grip of your inner critic.

5. Stop Putting Work Before Your Own Development

How many times have you pushed aside training courses, networking events, or self-improvement opportunities, believing you’re too busy or that now isn’t the right time? Believe it or not this short-sighted approach leaves you falling behind in the long run.

It’s time to break free from the conditioned belief that work must always come first. Discover how investing in your own growth and development can lead to profound transformation. Seek out mentors, invest in coaches, and set clear goals to unlock your true potential.
