#69 Why It’s Ok to Take Your Foot off the Gas Sometimes

The 360 Leadhership Podcast, Episode 69, 19 April 2023 by Lucy Gernon

Feel like you’ve no time for yourself lately?

For women in high positions of leadership, being successful in work, but also having a life outside it can often seem like an unattainable goal. Juggling long work hours, family responsibilities, and societal expectations can leave you feeling like you are constantly on the go, always moving from one task to the next!

Right?

It’s important to remember that prioritising your own well-being and happiness is just as important as productivity.

This is what happened to me. One morning, even though everything in my life was going well, I felt a bit down. Work was going great, my family life was wonderful, but my mind was telling me that I should be doing more. It was at that moment that I realised that we can become so used to being under pressure that when we have some downtime or when things are going well, guilt can take over.

It’s easy to get caught up in the never-ending cycle of work and productivity.

But it’s crucial to take a step back and allow yourself some spaciousness to recharge your mental and physical health. If you’ve recently transitioned from a super busy period to a slower pace, it’s completely normal to feel uneasy.

It’s okay to give yourself permission to just be present with yourself and take time to recharge your mental energy. The power and energy used in problem-solving and critical thinking can be draining. Over a prolonged period of time, your brain can become depleted.

This is why it’s so important to take the time to recharge your mental energy, whether that’s taking a day off, going for a walk, or just allowing yourself some time to relax with a glass of wine in the evening. Even if it means booking it into your diary to keep yourself accountable, each small step is a step closer to a happier you.

So just remember: It’s essential to take the time to prioritise your own well-being and happiness. By giving yourself some spaciousness and time to recharge your mental energy, you can achieve success, balance, and happiness in life without sacrificing your physical and mental health.

It’s okay to take a step back and just be present with yourself.
