#75 How to Separate the Personal You from The Professional You and Not Take Critique to Heart

The 360 Leadhership Podcast, Episode 75, 31 May 2023 by Lucy Gernon

Are you finding it challenging to convince decision-makers to act on your proposals?

When you invest so much of yourself into your work, it can be difficult to not feel personally attacked when someone critiques it. It’s almost like your job becomes an extension of your identity, and any feedback feels like a reflection of your worth as a person, right?

When I worked in the corporate world, I wanted to make a difference as a leader, leave behind a legacy and be a role model to my team. So whenever I received constructive feedback, it felt like a blow to my sense of purpose and mission.

Until I learned to decouple myself from the job which was SO liberating.

It took time (and a lot of internal work!) but I soon realised that my work was just a job, and that my personal worth was not tied to it. I learned to take critique as an opportunity to grow and improve instead of a personal attack.

Once I was able to separate my personal and professional self, I felt a sense of freedom and empowerment that allowed me to level up and excel in my role.

That is why when a member of my Powerhouse mastermind group for female leaders brought up this topic as a challenge she was having in our recent group coaching call, I could really empathise with her, as could the other members of the group .

In episode 75 of The Powerhouse Revolution Podcast, I share my top tips and strategies for separating personal and professional feedback. Thanks to both my personal experience and coaching sessions with hundreds of women leaders, you’ll learn valuable skills to help you grow and succeed in your career.

Here are 4 tips to get you started, but make sure to listen to episode 75 of The Powerhouse Revolution Podcast for waaay more gold including a story you’ll definitely relate to if you work in corporate leadership!

1. Remember that it’s not you, it’s the job:
Constructive feedback is not a reflection of who you are as a person. It’s just an assessment of the job you’ve done or how you’ve handled a situation. Easier said than done, but I go deeper on this in the podcast.

2. Give your brain to the business and keep your heart and soul for yourself:
When you’re so invested in your work that you’re sacrificing basic needs like going to the toilet or eating lunch away from your desk, it’s easy to take things personally. But it’s important to remember that your work is just one aspect of your life, and you need to take care of your personal needs too.Again, I get how hard this is to do, which is why women who feel this way hire me as their coach.

3. Look for the lesson in every critique:
Every critique or negative feedback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Instead of taking it as a personal attack, try to find the lesson in it and use it to improve your skills.

4. Create a support system:
Find people who can provide you with constructive feedback and support. Whether it’s a mastermind group, a coach, or a trusted colleague, having someone who can give you honest feedback and support can help you separate your personal and professional selves.
